The GSMA, the global organization for mobile operators, has released its annual State of Mobile Internet Connectivity Report for 2023, which reveals that 4.3 billion people now own a smartphone. This represents a significant increase from the 3.7 billion smartphone owners in 2020, and it means that over half of the world's population now has access to a smartphone.

The growth in smartphone ownership has been driven by a number of factors, including the declining cost of smartphones, the increasing availability of mobile internet networks, and the growing popularity of mobile apps and services. Smartphones have become an essential part of everyday life for billions of people around the world, and they are used for a wide range of activities, including communication, entertainment, education, and commerce.

The GSMA report also highlights the fact that smartphone ownership is not evenly distributed around the world. In developed countries, smartphone ownership is typically above 80%, while in low- and middle-income countries, smartphone ownership is often below 50%. However, the gap in smartphone ownership is narrowing, and the GSMA expects that smartphone ownership will reach 6 billion people by 2025.
