In short, autumn in Japan is very nice, but the climate nowadays is unpredictable.

FYI, this map shows the conditions of autumn leaves as of November 1st, last year.  In areas you see red 🍁, you could enjoy beautiful scenery in mountains with getting cool weather , but not in Kyoto.  I managed to translate the site. Autumn leaves would be a win but most important would be to have nice warm weather to enjoy the Japan as a hole ☺️
