Actually, quite a few Portuguese kept their race pure, and quite a few Brits did not (read Maugham's South Sea stories if you want to see how he, an eyewitness, described the situation). In any case, keeping your race pure is the ultimate good, allowing it to be mixed is the ultimate sin -- and quite fully deserving of the ultimate punishment.
