Turns out there is a bug in the Amethyst implementation.

I filter on "primal.net" with the intention to not show posts containing links from that domain as they load far too slow (upwards of a minute). Ideally this should not even retrieve profile and banner images as well. But Amethyst also hides all notes from an account if their banner is referencing the hidden word
