There might be something usable in a web of trust fashion, that only the original poll author can publish a verified set of votes from people withing their sphere.

This moves the attack vector to the original author, but maybe there's something possible with verification of all 'approved' votes by the author.

So, if you vote, you have to prove a certain 'closeness' to the vote author, and if the author closes the poll (or publishes intermediate results), a proof of the set of votes needs to be included.

But now I'm going a bit out of my depth.
all of these comcerns can be mitigated by having poll responses go to authors designated relay, and access control for relay access. amirite @cloud fodder?
Profiles are free, so people that don't have a direct connection with the author cannot vote then.

A vote should be both tamperproof from voters and the author.
Current zap based polls can be tampered with as well. This is not a reason to require all participants to pay to vote. There isnt even an option where an author can say they can pay 0
Zaps, reactions, boosts and follows can all be faked and abused...
Just because something can be abused, does not mean that it will be.

Most polls will not be abused because they are not worth the effort to attack them. There is no value in coming up with a ultra secure polling system that no one will want to use because it's not frictionless.

We desperately need zapless polls.
Exactly, people are acting like every poll needs to be securing against a rigged election lol. When realistically most polls on social media are like 'Do you think this apple looks like it's too rotten to eat?' or 'Does my bum looks big in this?'
Having a zapless poll doesn't mean zap polls can't exist tho.

I think we're acting as if polls are as important as a political election polling station. Most polls are for fun (remember fun? I think we're allowed to have fun sometimes on nostr ;) lol), and if a poll author desperately needs less tampering in thwir very impoetant and swrious poll, rhen they can make it a zap polls or (some other sort of PoW voting solution?).

Would be good to have polls across all/most clients too.

 Yep
