US assesses Russia launched space weapon near American satellite last week

Russia launched a satellite last week that the US believes to be a weapon capable of inspecting and attacking other satellites. The US Space Command stated that the Russian spacecraft, COSMOS 2576, is likely a counterspace weapon and has been deployed in the same orbit as a US government satellite. This is not the first time Russia has deployed satellites close to sensitive US spy satellites. The launch occurred on May 16 from Russia's Plesetsk launch site. The US assesses that the satellite is capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit.
