@836df508 hmm, as this is from Prussia and the Preussisches Landrecht for non-nobles was terrible, especially if you weren’t staying at the same place forever, I suspect that it has some more sinister function than just referrals and “5 stars, excellent work”.

That was certainly part of it. Labor protections were a lot worse back in those days - we should remember to thank unions for all the advances we've had since then.
Also, I am _extremely_ leery about nostalgia for "the good old days", due to examples like this one.
