 @03a95182 I used to think we should return to the days when it was beneath a candidate to openly campaign and rely on surrogates. Not so sure anymore given how equally insane the surrogates are these days. 
 @edc128e6 @03a95182 I read a book[*] earlier this year about Lincoln's 1860 campaign, especially the run-up to and during the convention. As per the norm, he wasn't campaigning openly, but hoo boy was he a crafty SOB. And a few of his campaign team may have been even more so.
