those of us who are here as refugees from the rest of the social networks, some of us at least are here because we are sick of being played with

we want to define our own rules, this is part of the reason why developers are a big part of the cohort of first adopters of #nostr

This is the wrong way to look at it. We have gotten used to content and services being free, and the only way to provide that is via ads, and targetted ads in particular. It's not hard to opt out of algorithmic feeds and use search like a properly developed mind. It's not hard to block ads. Then those services are actually quite valuable and beneficial.

I never used social media much because I just don't see how it can benefit me. What's the point of talking to strangers unless I got something to sell or buy ?

Nostr will fail at replacing regular social media but it doesn't matter. It needs to find a profitable niche for itself.

Nostr is thick client architecture, so development will be centralized around Amethyst and Damus. There is no need for more than a handful devs. Amethyst tries to add every possible feature and it makes the UI confusing and spreads dev time thin. Once again, a properly incentivized niche needs to be found and focused on. Otherwise, Nostr will join IPFS in the garden of failed projects.
 you missed the point

we are here building something, what are you doing? writing nonsense screeds about how and why this will fail even though it's still here and i am getting questions from my boss about how to bring the zaps experience, and nostr back end, to a new market
This is just to point into the right direction before I leave Nostr. Yes, this account is pure nonsense. I'm just sizing up the userbase.

I actually want Nostr to become more popular. I'll give you one more hint. It needs to provide better UX than the Tor browser. You can make more money without having a boss if you tap into the scene. Just need balls and imagination.
i see, and i suppose it's classified information which software you were involved in building as well
Not classified. I never worked for government agencies and likely never will. They don't pay well, and theyre lame. Still better not to publicize it as it will be against the terms of service of anything that relies on DNS. These days I don't have the patience for writing software or maintaining servers, I'm more on the auditing and architecture side.

I was looking for relays that are DNS free / onion only and couldn't find any. Tor integration is an afterthought. Maybe I just didn't look well enough.

If you have a few hours free time a week, you can create something better than existing solutions but on Nostr with better UX. Send me a DM if you want more details.

tor integration is admin, not programming

broadcasting and caching are programming things but not within the strict domain of a relay

if you were a good architect you'd understand that's a feature, not a bug
