GnuPG is a cautionary tale. I had a recent mishap/collision between the homebrew-installed OpenPGP and the obstinately insistent can-only-install-from-our-website GnuPG. tl;dr: keychain nuked.

Decades after inception, it takes a PhD in GPG to make it work.
It does the basics well enough, but doesn't hit the mark on the actual goals.
 You were just unlucky 😅
That's not a GPG issue, that's a packaging issue. While I've never owned Apple, I'm inclined to blame the Apple package based on the limited info given.
That is probably the reason lots of people switched to 'age' ...
 Age?

The author, for example, has more followers on X than GnuPG.org, and he is also a security lead for the Golang programming language, from Google.
Interesting. Thank you. It appears that there’s no (obvious) way in which this supports email encryption?
Well, it has an -a parameter for ASCII armor, same as GnuPG has, but no signing capabilities. So you can paste encrypted messages into your email client.

And thanks for the zap, much appreciated!
