GnuPG is a cautionary tale. I had a recent mishap/collision between the homebrew-installed OpenPGP and the obstinately insistent can-only-install-from-our-website GnuPG. tl;dr: keychain nuked. Decades after inception, it takes a PhD in GPG to make it work.
It does the basics well enough, but doesn't hit the mark on the actual goals.

That's not a GPG issue, that's a packaging issue. While I've never owned Apple, I'm inclined to blame the Apple package based on the limited info given.
