One of history's most iconic instances of people rising against their government occurred during the French Revolution in the late 18th century. The French populace stormed the Bastille on July 14, 1789, symbolizing their resistance to the monarchy's tyranny. This revolt led to a tumultuous period of radical political and social change, ultimately resulting in the downfall of the Bourbon monarchy and the rise of the French Republic, shaping the course of modern history.

During the French Revolution, a dark and extreme phase emerged as radicals known as the Jacobins executed numerous government officials, including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, via beheading. These gruesome acts, carried out with the guillotine, symbolized the radicalization of the revolution. The Reign of Terror (1793-1794) saw the rise of the Committee of Public Safety, led by Maximilien Robespierre, which aimed to eliminate perceived enemies of the revolution. This brutal period ended with Robespierre's own execution in 1794, marking a turbulent chapter in French history.
