 I don't like the book, I read half of it and stopped. 

 That man was mentally unwell, did lots of drugs, and was constantly spilling his consciousness into his typewriter, but it resulted in some pretty good sci-fi. Several of his books have been adapted on screen.

 Don't waste your time. The book is great, the movie butchered the book so bad they had to change the title because the core point of the book isn't in the movie at all.

 Definitely worth a watch - even if just for the Rutger Hauer scenes; but overall, I feel it's a bit over-hyped unless you're consciously grading on a curve due to its age.  As far as Ridley Scott sci-fi goes, I think Alien holds up way better.
