In a larger city, one must drive in awful traffic to get somewhere, anywhere. People out of necessity must structure their time, and "guest events" are more structured too, like having someone over for brunch, or dinner. When I lived more recently in a small town (5k people), "stopping by" was a frequent and welcome event! In even smaller towns, it's acceptable to go through unlocked doors to leave a note on kitchen table. 😊
