He quit smoking cigarettes when I was born so he could be around to watch me grow up. Everywhere we went in the small midwestern town my family is from everyone knew him and they all had stories about him. I would always stay up late and sit beside him at his desk and ask to hear stories from world war 2. I thought he was the coolest person in the world. A living legend. Im attempting to live my life in a way that my grandsons will feel the same about me. Got me all bullish on aspiring to greatness. But have you waded the inlet waterways off the coast of east africa? Did you jump from a helicopter into the freezing waters of Little Creek? Were you responsible for the education and uplifting of your local community on this Bitcoin journey? Did your kids live a better quality life than you did?

I have similar memories with my grandfather. I'm almost 40 and I've never met anyone that was more respected and deferred to in my life. He was a pillar of the community/family. One of my most cherished memories is when I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the kitchen light on and went down, it was probably 12am. He pulled out a tupperware full of deer neckbones(with the meat) in red sauce and we sat there in silence and ate the whole damn tupperware full of them.
My grandfather joined the Navy when he was 14 years old in as a gunner in 1898 to fight the boers. As the youngest son, he wasn’t going to inherit the family tailoring business so he ran away to sea. My father was the youngest of 4 separated almost to the day by 5 years as my grandfather had 5 year tours of duty. Aged in his late 80’s and after the death of my grandmother, he came to stay with us around 1973/4 where he decided, despite being semi literate, to write a book of his life. I have the original manuscript and a copy transcribed digitally which I intend to publish. He also painted the ships he served on.
