 The vet's office will probably try to tell you that your pet needs way more vaccines than what he actually needs, dont fall for it.  As  far as insurance, no need for that.  I love all my pets, but they are not humans. 

 Ya no way am I letting them shoot him up with a cocktail. They will need to seriously convince me and I’m already super cautious with that stuff. 

 Prevention is best. Spend the money on high quality food instead .. include some raw/raw freeze dried 

 This is interesting. What raw food do you feed yours? Chicken? Beef?

I’s say the answer for sure depends on your current money reserves and how much you’re willing to pay to keep this cute little guy going. You could self insure, but that becomes harder the more you’re willing to pay. Ofc the insurance will have a max too.
