Approval is a bitch, yes. Epic games is still the cheapest and best for indie devs from a real actual platform. If you're a regular dude who wants to do a solo project labor of love, you can make a game and publish it there and keep 88% of gross profits. It's like $250 to list it. If you use unreal engine dev kit it's free until the first million of gross revenue.
How scaleable is that though? Epic also seems like its unsustainable from everything i hear
From their side? Not terribly, but unreal engine is very good now and I think the appeal will be there for those who want to make games and aren't rich or don't want to give up their IP to work with the big evil companies. It's one of those things that will work great once it gets some momentum.
I mean you hope but idk. I hear UE5 is this greatest shit ever and gives you a bj as you dev it but ill believe it when i see it. If companies continue to make billions on microtrans schlock i dont see it being sustainable.
Enough people have to be done with the microtransaction scheme for it to work. It's only going to take a few dudes who get bored and start tinkering on their own. But yes UE5 is sweet! This dude documented his whole process from zero programming to making a game that he's since released on steam. He shows how he sources different things like customized models and lighting and all kinds of stuff in the video series. I see this as a "much watch" couple of videos for dudes interested in the idea of making a game. He even shared the results of his stuff as a dev with the steam store in a follow up video.
