I just bought an audio book on audible and realized I had to do it on my Mac because apple prevents payment for content from iPads and iOS, even in web browsers… And it got me thinking, why does apple let me have more freedom to control my environment and make my own choices on Mac but not the iPad? To be clear, they would remove Audible or any other app from their AppStore if they allowed paying for content using the web on their devices… In effect they’re banning buying any content on their devices without their cut. But why are they allowing people to use their Mac for that stuff? What makes a Mac different? I know there’s the history of a Mac being a full computer where you control root, but if it weren’t for historic reasons, why would Apple give more permissions on their computers vs iPads which feel the same in terms of most UI, have the same processors, etc… And yes, I know, it’s a problem of control, but most people use iOS devices in developed countries… so we can’t just ignore Apple’s platforms.
a sizeable amount of the professional creative software for mac is only available via the software company's website. the second answer is business models. the closer the devices get to the mac, the more they'll be pressured to get rid of the walled-garden.
“if it weren’t for historic reasons, why would Apple give more permissions on their computers vs iPads...?” I think they wouldn’t. History is the only reason they allow this, if you ask me. It seems clear that the new Apple is set on building walled gardens and taking their cut of all sales that happen inside of them.
Is it really the marketing, or how can Apple still exist using this level of racketeering and extortion? Don't tell me that people don't want an access to cheaper stuff directly from the source. Or is the logic, they could afford Apple product so they can afford the Apple surcharge? This is absolutely crazy.
Yes i think that's just a historical anomaly, it's not that different for say, Android versus Windows. Android users will put up with having no or very difficult root access, while if you'd take away adminstrator on Windows people would complain and probably migrate to some other OS. Phones are seen as "consumer devices" like TVs, set-top boxes (remember EFF "tivoitization" discourse?) and so on. Historically these didn't allow installing custom software at all, and if so, completely controlled by the cable company. Computers are seen as well, computers, which implies a larger degree of freedom. If it wasn't for the lucky historical anomaly of home computers and the internet, things would be a lot more locked down across the board, probably.
