What are you used to? GBoard and TypeWise are available in the App Store. I think M$’s SwiftType is still there too.
Gboard
Def in the App Store. https://i.nostr.build/RmB3Z.jpg
Doesn’t that phone home to Google with everything you type on it?
🤷 Probably does some. I just suggested it because it’s what he already uses. I’m not sure if it does everything you type or only when you use the built in google and gif search stuff.
iOS keyboard probably does the same too. 🤷🏻♂️
Closed source, so can’t verify, but they allege typing models are on device, and yeah, they definitely have some form of phone home for gifs (apple calls it #images). There is a nice giphy plugin too which I use more often. I would never lie to someone and allege the iPhone was safe for someone with a high threat profile though.
@nobody Do you like those keyboards better than the standard ios one?
No, but I’ve used iPhone since 2010, so I can understand the struggle. I feel the same way @Derek Ross does about the Samsung keyboard because it’s not my habitual flow. iOS keyboard has suffered some since they changed to an ML model for autocorrect, but I’m used to apple taking a few to knock off the edges. TypeWise was probably the one that tempted me the most. It has an entirely different paradigm for typing, almost like switching to dvorak or something. I just didn’t have the patience. I struggle the same way trying to learn Vim motions. I can see how it’s faster, but I can’t be assed to spend six weeks looking like a seal out of water to learn it.
Same. I’ve been using iphone for more than 10 years. I don’t like the autocorrect either, I just switch it off
It’ll be interesting to see if it improves on iOS 18 once they roll out the new foundation models. From what I understand it’ll be 2025 before we see all of them though.
I’m on ios 18 developer beta 1. Definitely not there yet. Same keyboard for now
The handwriting thing is super cool on iPad Pro though. My phone (or apps) didn’t like iOS 18, but I am running it on my M1 iPad Pro. Any favorite features or standout PITA’s that you’ve found yet?
The home screen customization is interesting. The handwritten calculator is really cool. What I’m really interested in is the new training load feature. It needs 1 more day of data to calculate. I’ll be able to compare with my other app soon
Hopefully I’ll be able to get back on a routine soon. Definitely want to hear how you like it and how it compares. That was a standout for me during WWDC as well.
I really like how the fitness app can determine the effort for certain activities like cycling but you can also override it with your perceived effort. That’s smart
Oh and I forgot about RCS. Great to finally see messages reactions properly with non apple users
I understood that wasn’t turned on yet. That’s cool. 😎
I see hearts over messages (from android users). What’s weird is that I also still see some “liked an image from xyz”
I’m going to be interested in how it turns out. RCS is one of the few legitimate complaints I have about android. The “open” standard doesn’t have e2ee, and some of the other nice things are also google closed extensions. I was a pixel user when RCS rolled out, and it was painful - google stepped in a standardized it finally, but they failed to open their extensions up. 🤷 every product has something different someone doesn’t like, but it’ll be interesting to see how nice those two will play. Since China forced the issue, and Apple put no emphasis on it during WWDC, I’m not hoping for much, but reactions and hopefully higher res photos would be awfully nice.
