YouTubers are a great audience to go after to grow nostr. They risk being deplatformed and losing their livelihood.

If we have a platform that works consistently well and is fast, it doesn’t cost them much to spend a little time to upload to nostr.

We just have to ensure it’s a smooth process and educate them on the benefits of nostr.

At first they’ll do it as an insurance on their main channel but they’ll slowly mention it to their audiences, bringing people here. Good marketing for nostr.
VIDEO HOSTING IS AN INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE PRODUCT TO OFFER WELL.

GOOGLE USES SURVEILLANCE TO PAY FOR IT. WILL BE HARD TO COMPETE BUT CENSORSHIP WILL INCREASE SO WE HAVE THAT.
Video hosting itself doesn’t need to be decentralized initially. Amazon is a lot less picky about what you host vs YouTube. I know it’s not ideal but a lesser of 2 evils when it comes to censorship. We use what we can and eventually full blossom.
How important is it to host 4k video? I'd be fine with a degoogled video service at 480p for 90% of the content out there. So many youtube videos are just somebody talking at a desk and they're playing at higher resolution than my monitor can even display.
Yeah a lot of people are posting videos that could just be audio. Much much cheaper
Google also began throttling video quality many years ago. Especially on phones. But recently on the web.

They can’t afford the bandwidth either.

Now you need to go and click “4K” to get the high quality.

90% of people don’t even care.
 360P 4 LYFE
Probably not that critical. I think 1080p would do fine. Some people will prefer 4K but Amazon hosting should be fairly cheap

I'm working on a project that may help solve this problem. This is our latest episode explaining it.

TLDR; decentralized, open source ad network Built on #nostr
Is it possible for individuals to host their own videos for streaming?
 Peertube+nostr🤔
 odysee is probably better tough.
if be interested to see how that works out since (afaik), the successful YouTubers are successful due to gaming the ins and outs of the YT algorithm.

i think popular on YT may not necessarily be popular here 🤷‍♂️

might see better stuff here with less junk. 🤷‍♂️
Still think there's gotta be a way to advertise Nostr without the confusion of advertising a protocol. People never said to each other "Hey man, you should come over and see what I've got going on, I'm on http but you can find my profile on www.myspace.com"
i mean sponsorship is a thing.
totally agree Karnage/reasons i moved here!
I would love to zap my favorite
YouTubers.
We’ve gotten onboard recently but to be honest there are technical issues and blocks.
First, I’m using primal for uploading video because most only allow images.
Second primal isn’t synced with actual follower numbers shown on other relays which is weird.
Third, I’m unable to sync or set up a wallet in here. Getting error messages and when I reply to support email no one hits me back. Seems very early still…
Hoping to see a fork of freetube, Invidious, or New Pipe in the future that lets you leave comments using Nostr and come up with a way to send zaps. That would be pretty amazing and probably a good first step.

FUTO has their Grayjay app and they do something similar with Polycentric for comments. They have a bigger scope though.

I can't wrap my head around how all that tube data is going to get stored on nostr/relays? Will we need many relays, need large storage on our devices?

No. It’s not stored on relays but on centralized servers for now. Nostr doesn’t need to solve distributed media immediately because it’s trivial to re-upload it. The biggest issue with centralized platforms is account rugging, and that’s what nostr solves.
On centralized serves sounds vulnerable. I assume they are scattered around the globe? I'm not a developer, but curious.
I get the rugging I think. If i take Russel Brand as example. He would start on youtube during c'rona and move the rest of his report that would get censured to rumble. If suddenly his full account on YT would disappear people know to find him on rumble. Like this would be nice if he also does that with nostr.
But if he and other large youtubers would flee to nostr.. Some post hours of tube per week. I'm curious how that will fit on a decentralized network?

To post on nostr you’d need to reupload to a non-YouTube server somewhere (probably AWS). Then you create the video event.

It is extra work for sure. Right now, there’s not much benefit for a large YouTuber to do this. In fact it’s probably a waste of time unless they don’t mind paying someone else to do it for them.

You’d need to find smaller YouTubers who have already tasted a bit of that rugging threat who may actually understand why they need nostr. To them, it might be worth the time to get involved with nostr slowly with some content.

My guess is this would be your privacy / tech crowd or anyone who has already been rugged before or is still rugged.

Not saying it’ll be easy, but there is an angle here to try.
Doesn't sound easy at all. Amazon web server sounds, being amazon, also like a risk to store content for long term. But I don't really know the details how it all works.
What I think get, is that ideally (in some hopefully near future) we have small/big servers scattered around the globe storing nostr content, were people see the benefit of nostr and invest in these servers for there own good. For now we get people aware this new way of posting content exists.
