Meshtastic is fantastic, but also have a look at Reticulum and NomadNet! Here's a screenshot of accessing an off-grid version of Wikipedia from NomadNet. https://image.nostr.build/3baff5cfc8bc7402defed36bb8e4cfacf7bca67e1bc4034a101ccddc160253bd.jpg
And FreakWan: https://github.com/antirez/freakwan From Salvatore, creator of Redis
Yes.

Where's the best place to connect to? I just tried setting up Sideband, but I don't know how to connect to any people/groups
That's a nice gadget, that's it. You won't use it in the real world when something like that is really needed, because nobody else around you has one. Plus: your cellphone will barely last one day even in standby mode and you will soon discover that coverage for that thing is god-awful with obstacles between both parties. We are talking about a reach of 30 meters, you might as well be shouting to your neighbors instead of using fancy devices. Real-world useful tech are sneakernets.
Sounds like you’re imagining a post-apocalyptic world
Scarce need to imagine far away, that kind of world happens today around the globe when you look with attention. A few eastern parts of Europe included in present. Imagine yourself with geo-blocked internet access, unable to fetch stuff from aliexpress and troubles to even keep your phone charged with power. Sneakernets become more useful than LoRa clouds.
Is sneakernet with deadrops on LXMF a better solution?
Haters gonna hate
This looks fun
I didn’t get mine yet.
how far does it take you ?
I just got it, haven’t had a chance to do anything yet
oh nice. what do you intend to use it for ? Keep an eye on your kids or something ?

Sounds like a personal problem. I regularly get strangers popping up to say hello and occasionally someone on an airplane flying over.
I agree. Here's range tests. You can ignore it and keep looking like a moron who can't admit he's wrong. https://meshtastic.org/docs/overview/range-tests/
