Nice read. Thanks. How is it evident in your military town that “no one wants to live near them”?
Folks from elsewhere call it Fayette-nam and make a joke out of the thought of ever living here.
What’s the “joke” … what is the cliche that makes Fayetteville “unlivable”?
There is the perception that it is full of 18-year old GIs with shaved heads and belligerent attitudes, that prostitution is rife and that the standard of living is low - none of which is accurate. Our crime metrics are lower than that of Durham, the home of Duke University or Charlotte, the state’s largest city and an international banking center. People also look down on Jacksonville, NC home of Camp Lejeune, the Marine base.
