 Wouldn't it also detect false oscillations like 18 wheelers passing by? How were they able to identify the nuclear test? 
 Not clear, all I can find is a description of the experiment.

 Reminds me of the LIGO experiment 
 Or the Michelson–Morley experiment, or any interferometer (I've been told they can catch earthquakes on the VLA radio telescopes). 
 Thinking about it a little more, he was probably careful with the times he made measurements. The best times to record would be at night, when everyone is sleeping, since he had it bolted to his bedroom's foundation. There would also be very few semi's driving after sundown, too. That would minimize the noise and false signals.
