With Nostr you have multiple servers where users can easily switch between. Also, individuals can run their own servers. 

 It's a database that will house your notes and messages. 

 Ive got a private one setup so just adding them into my relay stack will then backup everything I post by default ? 

 Dumb servers that repeat/redirect blobs of data from/to clients. In this case with storage, so essentially delayed repeats/redirects. 

 it's like those semaphore things where people used to communicate messages over distances with lights on top of towers. Relays are those towers.

 Relays are like the racer in a relay race passing on the Batton. Instead of one racer, there are many that get the Batton /message. 

 Relays are boards on the internet that people poste notes to, notes signed with a unique sign.

Clients go to the relais you want and show you the notes signed by people you follow
