No, it's better to self host xmpp, matrix and run a simplex relay. So you don't need to trust anybody and contribute to decentralize the web.
All these 3 leak your MetaData !!!

* SimpleX Chat got 380.000 $ from VillageGlobal = Jez Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, ect.
Can one self-host a threema server?
No, xmpp and simplex do not leak metadata.
The header of XMPP-Messages are unencrpyted, A Spyserver in the net can easily collect all the data, that fly´s by!

SimpleX collects IP-Adresses and is connected to Big Data Companys - see Messenger list.

85% of all Smartphone run on Google Android, which sends encrypted data to Google, everyday. So Google knows nearly every User PLUS its IP-Adress.

I don't find the funding of VillageGlobal for Simplex concerning. The founder clearly said that VG does not make any operational decisions and they are just an investor. Simplex has had plans on how to monetize corporate clients from the early days and that's what VG is interested in. Returns from that business model.

Besides that: Simplex is open source and you can host your own servers, that way nobody at simplex even knows you use their app and can't get any data from you.
There are no "free" messenger in this word. They all need money to run - websides, employees, Offices, ect.

If "Big"-Money is involved it won´t end good.

OpenSource doesn´t help because you can´t check if the server-code really runs on all relays.

A few relays with an Metadata-Collector and your privacy is gone!
For most messengers I would agree but Simplex is designed in a different way.
Don't trust a relay you don't run yourself? Don't connect to it. You can chat using Simplex without ever connecting to a Server not run by you.
And if you do want to connect to your recipient's relay, just use Tor and there is no evidence of where the message came from.
If the recipient is offline, the messages are sent to relay!

And as a rule, only the recipient knows whether they are currently online or offline.

TOR is infected by the US government

It´s all about Metadata!

With Simplex are always routed through relays.
What metadata does the recipient relay server get then?
SimpleX collects IP-Adresses and is connected to Big Data Companys - see Messenger list above!

You are not answering the question. If you argue that Google has a backdoor to all mobile phones than no messenger is safe to use.

SimpleX Ltd clearly state that they do not store IP addresses. Don't trust them? Use Tor, a VPN or both. By the way you can enable private routing which routes your outgoing messages over your inbound relay which you can self host and trust. That way your device NEVER CONNECTS TO A SERVER YOU DONT CONTROLL.

I don't know why you shill Threema so much they are in no aspect better than SimpleX.

Your adversity to "Big money" is purely ideological and not based in fact. Threema receives money from government actors (that pay for a good messenger). Does that corrupt them?

Don't just refer to some messenger tier list, do your own research.
 No backdoor!

Google knows the IP to nearly every User!

So: TOR, VPN, it all doesn´t matter!
The traffic of Threema only visits one server - the Threema Server.

And this server does NOT store metadata nor IP-Adresses.

 "Big Money"

and

"Big Tech Money"

are 2 different things!

 Good list.

Can you ELI5 how threema removed the relay server?
What do you think about Delta chat?

Threema will be forced to stop serving EU customers via IP scan for example and the app stores will ban it. Normies will have to adapt quickly.
The EU is not able to force Threema to anything!

There is no legal way for that!

You think a company can break EU law without consequences?

Threema
Sure, and I hope that's the case.

Nevertheless, it remains the case that the company cannot offer its services with impunity in the EU after the law has been passed.
