How I use nostr on mobile:

I don't.

Haha. Seriously, it kills my data if I open Damus for more than 5 mins here and there on some days.

Wifi only.
Yeah, that's one of the creepy things. Even with so-called “unlimited data” which is 40 GB, I run out pretty fast
Nostr should probably think about ways to address this. How can we gain mass adoption if people can't use it while out and about?
Its also still pretty crap in the browser on desktop imho...
I find that some clients work 80% 10% of the time lol
@damus android being designed with low data mode to start

on damus iOS have you tried disabling auto-load media to test bandwidth usage?
I haven't. But media is the best part! 🤣
I'll try that for now (next month, my current data has been gone for a while lol)
 🪦
Yeah not too many people have unlimited data. Idk I rissed this question many times but seems like nothing has changed since then 😅
Unlimited is not what people think it means (not anymore at least).
I finally got an email stating that unlimited data is available in my area (I've been going over every month) but in order to do that, I have to accept their router and security settings and I'm not sure I want to do that. The last time I had one of their routers, they wouldn't let me open port 443 (HTTPS) to my own applications.
Woah. I thought You had it. Damn
Yeah, I also wouldn't accept such terms.
Diving deeper. Looks like there is a way to select just the unlimited data. $30/mo is better than the $90 overage fee they hit me with last month.
Overage fee 👀 On my end if I run out of the data the internet is slow as fuck and I can't use it at all.
Same here. Once my data runs out I can't use anything, can't run any nostr app, no netflix, no youtube. Some things still open and sort of work but super slowly.
I have 10 gigs and use amethyst all the time on the go... Idk why others seem to have big probs with this.
Damus used 35.4GB for me, and I barely use Damus when I'm outside. I literally open for 2 mins and close out (maybe it's still running in background? I don't know...) That is how I use the app most of the time - open, upload an image (some outdoor crap), and close. I may be underestimating the frequency, but it's certainly not like I would have used Twitter back in the day.
Just looked, I was on vacation for memorial Day and used for a 4 day weekend mostly on data and a lot in the car ride and was a lot more than usual but past month usage even with that was 9.2gb
Data limits are a scam. Soon unlimited will in fact be unlimited. In one way or another.
Personal servers. Connect your client to a single backend that is doing most of the work for you and only requires fetching minimal data. (Feed diffs, etc)
I hate typing on my phone, so I ususally only use social media on a desktop system.. nostr kinda sucks on desktop in the browser.. it keeps losing who I follow and/or PM's don't show up.

Hmm. Have you tried different clients?
yeah, nostrudl is okay on desktop
But I'm not verry happy with nostr yet.. it needs to be more reliable.
yeah the desktop experience is more painful than mobile and like you, it's hard for me to keep up on mobile so I switch to desktop.
learn to swipe and never look back.
That still does not beat the speed of my hands on a keyboard.
We have an open ticket for this…
Hehe, I don't mean to single out Damus, it's just what I use. I love Damus! I'm more concerned for the entirety of this space if it's not addressed.
 Definitely
I only use nostr via Damas on my phone. I have to clear the cashe occasionally
Most if not all nostr clients are unusable on mobile because of data consumption.
Do you think this is a fatal flaw in protocol design or something we can overcome? (for all users, not just a handful who use client Z)
Same, I only use when on WiFi.
But FWIW, it looks like Primal uses less data than Amethyst. 12GB vs 6GB this month.

Sounds cool, but how does the average person use this without crazy install steps?
 Use public bouncer.

wss://bostr.lecturify.net is a public bouncer hosted by me. See the relays list that it bounces at https://bostr.lecturify.net

Before you connect, You will need to ensure that your client's relay list only connect to a single bouncer. Unless you need to use paid relays, You will also need to add it manually into your client.

With that being said, Your client's relay list should looked like this:

 Let’s try it…
