Pokémon combat could have been made way more interesting by just allowing you to deliberately go second even if you are faster. They could have added this way back in Gen 2 but never did as far as I know. Missed opportunity. 

 They knew their success was exclusively luck and Iwata. They've been terrified of reality catching up with them since.
