Are there any active forums for Meshtastic (and/or similar technologies/protocols)? A website forum, nostr community, etc?
You looked on their website?
The closest thing to a forum on their website is the link to their subreddit I guess, but after the intense censoring they started doing to subreddits a while back, I'd appreciate not having to use Reddit.

irl meetups/that's the point! .blamethebowl/hearsay
We don't even have a lot of bitcoin meetups locally, I'd be surprised if there was any local meshtastic meetups

On the Meshtastic homepage, they have links to several legacy social media accounts / forums. On nostr, we have folks that actively use #mesh #meshtastic #lora #reticulum to tag this content. Also check out reticulum. https://meshtastic.org/
Can you give some recommendations on what devices/boards to go for?
Heltec V3 is great, affordable starter board easily get on amazon LilyGo TDeck is more advanced option Then you're down the rabbit hole
LilyGo TDeck is more advanced because of the integrated screen? And that you can use the device itself to communicate? Or does it have other features that makes it better/more advanced than other devices?
You can, they are in progress of making an improved UX for the t-deck. It will be very slick. Depending on your dev skills, you can start playing with early versions today. It just wont be available in the easy to use web firmware flasher. Not sure when it will be delivered. For now, it is very similar to UX of the other nodes with a keyboard attached and you can still Bluetooth in via phone etc.
TDeck has more features like keyboard, more IO options built in and bit larger RAM (I believe) Tbeam is same without keyboard (great device) RAK also has some great dwvices Simplest is to just get started with a simple Heltec V3 or LilyGo T-Beam (SX1262/SX1276) as the T-Beam comes with a place for standard 18650 battery Checkout more hardware options with details here👇 https://meshtastic.org/docs/hardware/devices
Thanks, appreciate the help
I have a planned meshtastic guide & demo. I'll bump that up on my list to complete & share 🚀
I think getting two Helltec v3’s is a good starting place. Every option is good. Some may be more useful for remote solar nodes than others due to power draw. Some have GPS functionality by default, for most of them you can add it. They did an amazing job on the devices page. Very user friendly way to learn about each device. https://meshtastic.org/docs/hardware/devices/
Doesn't look like you get a rechargable battery when buying a Heltec v3 from Amazon or AliExpress. Any advice on what to look out for? I see that it has to be a 3.7V lithium battery and have the socket type "SH1.25 x 2", but as a major battery noob, I have no idea what to get (and what to not get).
If you search on Amazon for something like this, you should be good. “MakerFocus 4pcs 3.7V 1100mAh Lithium Rechargeable Battery 1S 1C LiPo Battery with Protection Board, Insulated Rubber Tape and Micro JST 1.25 Plug for Ar duino Nodemcu ESP32 Development Board” ⚡️Every Meshtastic device I’ve tested so dar that could use a removable battery has come with the correct battery connection that you could easily diy splice onto a battery if the battery comes with the wrong one. Just make sure to get positive and negative wired correctly.⚡️
Maybe we need a ditto instance for metastatic users. Subdivide it into areas? nostr:nprofile1qqsqgc0uhmxycvm5gwvn944c7yfxnnxm0nyh8tt62zhrvtd3xkj8fhgprdmhxue69uhkwmr9v9ek7mnpw3hhytnyv4mz7un9d3shjqgcwaehxw309ahx7umywf5hvefwv9c8qtmjv4kxz7gpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43z7s3al0v
