I sympathize with your view @NVK about embracing spontaneous order and the importance of lowering the attack surface for the network during potential upgrade activations.

At the same time I find myself tending to agree more with @jamesob and seeking an efficient means of signaling honest market sentiment for coordinating upgrades among node operators. 

There are extremely smart people in the Bitcoin space. Technically speaking, is there any possibility for a sly roundabout protocol to accurately survey market sentiment and efficiently coordinate upgrades that simultaneously effectively mitigates attack risks?
