it's true... the old word was "digit" and you use your thumb to count too right? thus 10? the innovation in fingers happened around the time of the appearance of felines... many types of cats almost have opposable thumbs, domestic cats can grab onto stuff with one hand because they have a sorta thumb spaced far from the rest of their fingers (and they only have 4 fingers on their back feet also btw)
