All good thoughts! Solar doesn't HAVE to be expensive. If you don't mind it being offgrid and DC it is absurdly cheap. I have run a big DC camping freezer off three solar panels and a solar regulator. Without expensive batteries it doesn't run at night - but that's when its cold outside anyway and you're not opening it either.
