Contrary to popular belief, zaps aren't necessary to use nostr.
And this is probably the salty old Bitcoiner in me coming out, but I generally think that reliance on custodians breeds laziness in a sense. If Bitcoin is going to succeed, people need to learn to use the tools in a self-sovereign manner.
And I know not everyone is tech savvy and needs to take their own baby steps to get to that point where they are comfortable holdong their own keys. But I'll reiterate if you get too comfortable using a custodial solution and the environment turns extremely hostile, you're going to be fucked.
And I'm genuinely not trying to sound like an asshole. I'm just worried about the seeming over-reliance on custodial solutions that I see, at least on Nostr.
I get it! You're really right, I just would like to see easy steps still be available for the curious to start with.
This ⬆️ I've been here since May trying to figure out self-custody and if my friend hadn't of taught me WoS I probably wouldn't have hung around for long.
Is there a lack of beginner friendly content for self coustody? Or is it something analogous to option paralysis and not really going where to start?
It's not beginner content so much as self-custody is too complicated at the moment.
For the non-initiated there is a steep learning curve just to know what you are doing and no really easy way to learn it.
You definitely have to put in the work to understand a bit. Have you checked out BTC Sessions at all on YouTube? I hear Nothing but good things about his tutorial videos.
That's a very fair point, but, trying to take a normie straight to cold storage of sub-penny zap transactions is quite the large step.
