What's a VPN provider would you recommend to someone who's non-technical?

ExpressVPN doesn't store any data, includes kill switch, leak protection, and 256-bit encryption, lets you connect 5 devices at once. It was apparently voted the best VPN of 2024.
the problem with using your own vpn on a vps is that you don't get residential ip addresses so you might be seeing tons of captchas everywhere

also its all about the risk model, vpns are used to either hide the origin of where you are coming from or hide your traffic from your isp. by using a service you also have a larger anonymity set vs having your own vps
