Quotes are part of the nostr algorithm, replies aren't.

If I quote you I've put your note in front of all of my followers but a reply won't. It also puts my reply in front of my followers instead of just the people who read replies to your one note. 

 Why not use a boost instead? Are you adding value to the conversation with your one word response?
