Florida woman sues Google for deplatforming after she sent pro-life email through Gmail

This is yet another example of why you should not be using the infrastructure of your enemy for critical functions to your life. A 76-year-old woman in Jacksonville is suing Google for deplatforming her about an hour after she emailed members of her pro-life group calling for a peaceful Catholic Mass and gathering in front of A Woman’s Choice, an abortion business in Florida.

Trudy Perez-Poveda says Google targeted her after she sent the correspondence through Gmail. Google refused to allow Perez-Poveda to access her more than 11-year trove of stored emails, photographs, calendars, contacts and other data, her attorneys say.

People will say “oh, but I’m not protesting”, but here’s the thing: Google is involved in so many different industries and causes, across both the left and right, that the number of triggers is beyond what can be avoided. In fact, any industry, even if not political, has the potential to shake up competitors and cause them to want to stop this change. If Google will always side with the powerful incumbent, even if purely economical, then if you’re using Gmail, you’re essentially saying:

“I do not now, and never will, have anything of value to say”

Wow, I knew Google was analyzing email content for targeted ads, but this is new to me and another dimension. This is Orwellian truespeak/precrime shit.

Absolutely untrustworthy email provider ever. Only usable for signup confirmation emails, if at all.

Use smaller and better providers like https://purelymail.com/ or https://dismail.de/ (<- has one of the best security configurations btw). Or get an own domain and add an email server to it, which also looks more professional and costs less than $10/month.

In principle, since 2017, Google's terms explicitly say they do not scan emails for ad targeting. https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/23/15862492/google-gmail-advertising-targeting-privacy-cloud-business But they do have a long list of 3rd parties who they vet (and then don't police) who have access to read emails https://mashable.com/article/google-reading-your-emails-response

Google say they can scan emails for "security purposes".

So, screw Google every which way. Much easier to delete the whole empire from your digital life than play their game of whackamole trying to find the right combination of settings to be shielded from their invasions of privacy. And if there is such a combination, you can bet they will move the goalposts to make sure they still have a way in.
