When do you think it will increase? We already got spam, but so far it was handleable. I assume, as its popularity grows, the spam will grow. So we might have waves, but I assume, it has to be more popular to attract more spam. Wdyt?
it will definitely grow with popularity. we have ratelimit scripts on the damus relay to stop the bulk of it, but we allow 6 or so note every minute per IP, so spammers can do 6 posts * number of machines they have per minute, which is still a lot.
could POW be an option like the had in mind in the early email days...
more clients and relays should build in proof of work, it will at least discourage some of the worst offenders.

Problem is, going that way you end up in censor land, and therefore unappealing and hated. If you use paid relays, little to no use, it become a tiny Eco chamber. Leaving it open to everything is the way, using clients that filter the content to hastags you follow and people you follow should suffice. And for those that love to pay for services, paid relays censoring everything they hate to read, their money, their choice , for everyone else, freedom!
I believe that many customers are prepared to fight spam with a lot of energy and vitality in this. The great privilege today, in my view, is that the lack of addicted algorithms and programmed to generate revenue, through selling us - prevents them from being here en masse!

some llms can identify bot generated text. if you use a smarter llm it may block dumber llms. bots can be reported with kind=1984 if they are not properly tagging their posts/profiles there could be 'prove you are not a robot' over a NIP or something. sheer number of bytes / sec may give them away. messages looking similar may give them away. proof of work could slow them down.
