In the past antennas for West German television were 'banned' in East Germany (the old GDR). My father and many other people simply installed them in their attics. Later, all the roofs were full of them. Information war as today... Technology finds its way. 😉

I don't know exactly. Disadvantages at work perhaps, bad political 'scoring' and a note in parents' Stasi file. I was a child back then in the early 70s. At school, we shouldn't talk about the fact that our family also watched 'other' programs on TV. Many parallels to today...
