US inflation increases moderately; consumer spending boosts Q2 outlook

US inflation increased moderately in March, with the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rising 0.3% last month. Goods prices edged up 0.1% while services prices rose 0.4%. Inflation rose 2.7% in the 12 months through March. The report from the Commerce Department also showed strong consumer spending last month, with consumer spending increasing by a solid 0.8%. The increase in inflation and consumer spending offers some relief to financial markets after concerns of stagflation. The Federal Reserve is expected to leave rates unchanged next week.
