Just decentralize hosting, indexing, and searching of YouTube's library. Make a bittorrent-based app that lets you search YouTube and when you pick a video to watch, the app automatically checks if the video is available as a torrent, and if a torrent isn't available, you can download it from YouTube directly, add it to the torrent index, and start seeding.
To be clear, the part of this nostr would be useful for is the index.
The rest of it is just bittorrent and a YouTube frontend.
Tip from Amir:
1. install qbittorrent
2. view -> search engine
3. click "Search plugins..." on newly appeared Search tab
4. click "Check for updates"
5. click Close
6. search whatever you want. Make sure you order by Seeders
7. BONUS: use "download in sequential order" (when downloading new, or from right click menu) to stream your movie and play it in VLC or MPV

Wow, I've been using qbittorrent without even knowing how to search with it. Maybe they keep search functionality tucked away like this to avoid harassment by the copyright cartel? Thanks for the tip

Thinking about this more, we're 95% of the way there already - nostr already indexes bittorrent infohashes, and there are already YouTube frontends.
It might help if nostr's bittorrent indexing added a text field for YouTube video ID (watch?v=id)
To credit original creators, the client could also use a new npub for every upload, with an automatically-generated kind 0 profile called "@youtubehandle reposter" (replacing youtubehandle as appropriate)
I might have to make a bounty for this, we're so close. A bounty might not even be needed though, surely I'm not the only one thinking of this?
