One of these things is not like the others...

But there are FOSS P2P alternatives...

So why proton? 🤔
Encrypted, can import your own PGP key if you don’t trust theirs, can send public key with every email, no KYC sign up, onion site, non-profit structure (or will be soon)
They're still an identity provider, like apple or google. If you're gonna build/verify/self host your devices OS and your wallets, why not your identity/email/cloud too?
You should have multiple identities and none at all for different purposes. A non kyc proton account that has never seen anything except tor is a good nym identity. Real name through clear net shows that you're a standup guy that's not hiding anything is another identity.

Most people are just going to screw up self hosting email. Either through security risks or by leaking meta data. I'm not so 1337 that I can admit even I can make mistakes. Better to use a off the shelf solution that can be compartmentlized and doesn't draw that much attention if you're trying to pass as John Smith.

I am a fan of self hosting cloud files, back up drives, and commercial hosting. They all have pros and cons and you use the required tool for the job at hand. All securely encrypted before storage of course.
I am but a child learning privacy.

Working towards mastery.

Keep the content coming, I’m all ears.
