 It’s amazing that a pc I built 5 years ago will work fairly well if I just upgrade the video card. 

All those advancements in CPU and RAM don’t really mean much in the grand scheme of things. For gaming a video upgrade would do just fine. 
 True until you need 32Gb+ RAM 
 Already have 32 but ddr4 is cheap now. Can get 64gb under 120 if not mistaken 
 And the diff. Between the newest stuff is negligible 
 I would not upgrade beyond 32 at this point. Id want a whole new board at that point. Id only do video and save cpu board and ram upgrades for later. Ok, maybe I’d upgrade to 4tb ssd since that’s future-proof 
 We are at a point where the limiting factor is the distance between the components. That’s why we can see a trend to SoC computers.
The problem is that you are no longer able to upgrade single components. 
 I would not like not being able to upgrade individual components unless price on the new stuff drops a lot over time
