US shows understanding of Chabahar Port operations importance: India

The United States has shown an understanding of the importance of the Chabahar Port operations for continued humanitarian supplies to Afghanistan and to provide Afghanistan with economic alternatives, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. The US has also appreciated the larger relevance of the Chabahar project in the context of humanitarian supplies to Afghanistan. This comes in response to the US threat of sanctions following the India-Iran 10-year deal on the management of the Chabahar Port. India's commitment to the port is to realize its potential as a connectivity hub for Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. The Indian company, India Ports Global Limited, has been operating the port since 2018 on an interim lease. The US had exempted India from certain sanctions for the development of the Chabahar Port in 2018, recognizing India's role in the port's development. The waiver covered not only Afghanistan but also Central Asia and the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
