I've been impressed with how quickly my body is adapting though.

Keep going, just do inclines on your knees to start. It's ok, we won't judge (too harshly 😝).

 Start slow and make regular relax days. That's the secret! 
 Add variations, incline, on knees, decline, wide, close, normal this will help spread the load and you will get a more even gain.

I have never done it everyday either, now I'm on my third day and it's becoming more and more manageable.

I do 25x4 spread throughout the day. 
 If you really want to do it, do what I used to do. Top of hour for 8 hours I’d do as many pushups I could in two minutes. Next day I’d rotate to crunches. Strong core helps everything 🫂
Ran every day. An accident took my ability to do many things, running being the biggest. 😭

 Try stretching , train with fascia roll for lower abs. In general pushups are a good exercise bodyweight exercises are the best and most versatile. But stretching is more important than mussels. 
 I decided to do ten to 10k. 
Much easier and you can do it to eternity…

Your arms gave out before the chest (the primary target muscle of this exercise..) because your arms are the weakest link at the moment.

Aim to do a bit more progressively each day, and have some rest days here and there.
