Here is how they work properly. You place your vote. The system administrator remotely connects into the voting machine. Asses who you voted for. Then switch your vote to another candidate if it is determined you voted for the wrong one. 

This is for your own safety. It is a feature. Not a bug. Certainly not how most modern day elections are stolen either.

Paper voting. Require IDs. No mail in votes. Hand counted and verified by independent volunteers. Anything less is insecure and unacceptable.
