Explainer: British judges' resignations put Hong Kong rule of law in spotlight

Two senior British judges, Lawrence Collins and Jonathan Sumption, resigned from Hong Kong's top appeals court, citing concerns over the political situation following the convictions of 14 democratic activists amid a national security crackdown. Their resignations highlight international worries about the erosion of the rule of law in Hong Kong. Foreign judges have traditionally bolstered confidence in Hong Kong's judiciary, which follows British Common Law traditions. However, recent national security laws and political pressures have raised questions about judicial independence. Despite the resignations, eight foreign judges remain on the Court of Final Appeal. The situation has prompted calls from the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China for sanctions against judges involved in national security cases.
