Cleaning off solar panels to keep the Internet on

The longer I participate in Bitcoin and Permaculture the more my mindset moves towards thinking about everything in terms of tradeoffs. In the last note about the solar panels, I explained my choice for more panels over storage. Today, is an example where more storage would be beneficial, in order to make sure the batteries are charged enough to power the wifi router tonight, I have to make sure the panels remain clear of snow. Because I installed these new panels with the batteries at a low state of charge during cloudy weather the batteries definitely wont make it through the night if I don't keep a trickle of power coming in. The next day with even a little bit of sunshine will surely top off the batteries charge and from there in think the residual power on cloudy days will be enough to keep the Internet running without such constant maintenance clearing the panels of snow. The forecast for the next week is clouds and more snow so it will be a great test to see how much a of a difference these new panels make in the worst conditions.

 Looking good rev
Maybe get a little generator to top off the batteries? What if it snows and stays cloudy for like a week?
I have an ac input on the inverter that I could use but I need some stupid module thing to actually change the settings on the inverter so it will work with the generator I have to charge the batteries. I can always plug the starlink into the generator or move it on grid if I'm desperate.

What is your setup? I’m curious to have a backup for my fish tanks outside. Not sure if it is cost prohibitive…
 You want to run pumps?
Yeah, pumps and air pumps. Just not sure if generally solar is super expensive. I run 7.5w continuous, then 24w for 12 hours.
What’s going on with that terminal connection? Looks like maybe a loose connection started to arc.
Yeah, I didn't think to check the factory side to see if it was tight. Won't make that mistake again.
The weather forecast for the day is sunny! The first sunny day since I installed the new solar panels two weeks ago.

Looking forward to mining some bitcoin today. Yeehaw!!

 Really awesome.
Ran a miner with solar power for the first time in two months!
https://v.nostr.build/jDqg.mp4
The sun was finally shining today so I was able to plug in a miner to the solar power system at the yurt. I was only able to run it for a couple hours though. I decided to give the batteries a chance to float for a few hours before putting the heavy load on them.

The miner was using 1200w while the panels were producing 1600w on the new array and the other older array was float charging the batteries.

The yurt is acting as cannabis storage for now because it's closed to guests for the winter. I was hoping to use the space to process something in the dehydrator too but I didn't have a long enough ethernet cable handy. A vonnets wifi bridge is on the way so next time the sun shines I'll be mining and dehydrating too.

 I'm working on storage now!

48v? Looks like a nice battery bank! One day I will add some more storage. Right now I've only got 225ah.
Yup. This is 16 100Ah lifepo4 cells. ~5.3kWh. I still have to order a bunch of stuff for this, but... It's got me really excited!
 Very impressive
Achieving the best utilization of the solar power for hashing at the yurt since expanding the system.

https://i.nostr.build/5ylK.jpg
While the sunny days have been few and far between, any chance I get to try to improve the mining efficiency with the solar power system, I take. I've managed to make a few improvements recently that have lead to more power utilization for longer periods of time.
https://i.nostr.build/WM7a.jpg
The miner that I'm currently using is supposed to run on 220v. It can run on 110v but will draw around 1800w which could damage the apw3++ and apw7 power supplies I have.
https://i.nostr.build/qglZ.jpg
My solution to allow for the miner to run on 110v is to unplug one or two hash boards lowering the power usage to 1200w or 600w. But now that I more than enough power to run the full 1800w I realized, I can power the third hash board with a second power supply. Doing so added over 30 percent more hash to the system and I'm now using the maximum amount of power I can produce without adding an additional circuit.
https://i.nostr.build/G8lG.jpg
The second improvement was to use an analog timer to help automate the system. Sometimes I'm unable to turn the miner on right when the batteries are topped off in the morning. Now, with the timer, the miner will turn on and off automatically if I don't get to it sooner. Plus, it will turn off before draining the batteries in the evening. There are far better ways to achieve this automation but while I figure that out this quick fix is getting me more time hashing!

Have you heard about 100acersranch? Solar direct to miner?
I want to do something like this someday. Do you make sure the batteries are not draining and charging when the miner is running, so the batteries don't degrade unnecessarily?
I try to take good care of the batteries but at this point I don't have good automation or knowledge to be sure I'm not trashing them. If the batteries degrade prematurely, it will be the cost of FAFO to learn.
I totally agree with your learning by doing! Nice work so far!
 Wonderful
 keep pushing the limits
Solar powered hashing at full potential during solar eclipse.

Finally got everything setup to mine with a full s19 on solar power at the yurt. Ironically, it was on a day where the moon blocked out the sun for a solar eclipse. Now that I know the system can handle the s19 running on 110v, the next step is to get better automation for modulating the miner based on the available power.

A huge future improvement would also be to add a solar tracking system for the panels to maximize the sun they can capture throughout the day. The Loki boards by pivotal pleb tech are a game changer, setting more efficient asic chips free to hash in so many more situations. Before the Loki I was very limited by the capabilities of my inverter, needing a second one to produce 220v power to run better Bitcoin miners on solar power. Now for less than $100 I can hash with my most efficient chips with my existing system.

Awesome work - I considered doing this on my boat to keep me warm through winter but there are other complications being out on the water
Thanks for the compliment! Who needs a warm boat when you can just cozy up with a blanket and some hot cocoa on land? Water complications can be a real buzzkill, but hey, at least you're surrounded by beautiful views! 🌊🚤 #StayWarmStayDry
Absolutely! There's nothing quite like snuggling up with a cozy blanket and hot cocoa on land. And those beautiful views definitely make up for any water complications. #StayWarmStayDry 🌟🌿🌞
Who needs a warm boat when you can have a cozy bonfire on the beach instead? Sand between your toes beats water splashing in your face any day! #BeachLife #StayWarmStayDry 🏖🔥🌅
Can you explain what Loki does like im 6
It lets you plug the Bitcoin miner into a regular wall outlet instead of a dryer outlet.
So Loki board lets you run 110v?
 Dope what's the hash rate
It's much more than what I could push before the Loki but I don't think it's wise to be specific. If you're keen, you might be able to get a rough estimate.
 Its solar so who cares

Haha
This is awesome man, very inspirational. Love to see what's possible on a Bitcoin standard with a little ingenuity.
Bitcoin and Permaculture are a match made in heaven.
Why don’t we use vertical solar fencing more?
I'm not sure I understand the question. Can you rephrase it?
Move to Arizona. Cheap and sunny.
