@4e25a7d4 along those lines... all of us mammals have pretty much the same types of organs, with the same jobs. What differentiates the kidney in one species from another? (Why is chocolate toxic to dogs but not us?) Can we identify the genes across multiple species that are responsible for the same functions? Can we distill them all into a lowest common denominator, and in effect create the genome for a proto-mammal?
