It was an interesting time.  Gavin was pretty good at the start.  He wrote the faucet.  He did a lot of honest things.  And had a great sense of humour.  In a lot of ways he was much better and more skilled than Giovanni aka fiatjaf.  I dont really think he went on the payroll after that, but Satoshi didnt like it, Im sure.  He did move bitcoin much closer to the corporations and VCs, just as nostr is moving now.  But one person stood up to him, and created the BIP system to slow him down, and eventually he was removed as chief scientist.  This was really the first bitcoin civil war that the community won.  There were more to follow.  Good things need to be fought for.
