And the ironic thing is that so much truly fantastic coffee is produced in SA. They just completely drop the ball in the roasting and pulling departments. It’s the same with chocolate: grows there but no idea how to make it a fine thing. Probably something to do with the machines being prohibitively expensive (especially for chocolate) and low demand.

This!! That’s exactly it. Great beans, not so great end product. The expensive machines and culturally different tastes might be key contributing factors as to why you find good coffee in Europe but with beans from SA (and beyond).
