Oddbean new post about login | logout I've been reading about preconditioning for a while, and recently, whitening (related, sphering, these names ??!). There seems to be general confusion about these terms. Also --standardization and normalization. Sort of a mess.
@2e9f5e44 My phd thesis was on multigrid preconditioners, and “normalization” is the only term I could apply without looking anything up (“whitening” I’m pretty sure I know but would look up just to be sure; sphering? standardization? nope).
