I only play Premier League version, so English ‘soccer’. Players get £100m to buy a team of 15. Goal/defenders get points for clean sheets, midfielders for assists, strikers for goals in essence. If a player on your team scores an actual goal that weekend IRL you get points. It makes IRL games more interesting as you’re watching who’s playing, how they do. Games you wouldn’t normally care about are more interesting if you know you or a buddy has players in that team. For me it’s about the small private leagues of old friend groups, an excuse to chat and socialise. It’s good fun
There is obvs more nuance - bonus points for players with the best stats in a game, transfers to swap in/out players, double points for your captain, strategy about weeks where some teams don’t play/have double games…
The transfers system is quite interesting as player values go up/down based on how the broader market buys/sells. But you only realise half the gain if you sell, so buying back players is tough. Or sometimes you sell at the right time when they’re out with a bad injury and others sell too late.
Plus I just love staring at statistics and tables and doing thought experiments. I may spend too much time on all this now I’ve written it down 🤣🤣🤣🫂
